Kenya tops medals table at Beijing 2015

Kenya topped the overall medals table with 7 golds, 6 silvers and 3 bronze medals at the 15th IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Beijing, China on Sunday.

Kenya topped the overall medals table with seven golds, six silvers and three bronze medals at the 15th IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Beijing, China on Sunday.

One more medal in the men’s 1500m by [link id=”207″ tax=”post_tag” text=”Asbel Kiprop”], coupled with Jamaica snatching the 4x400m gold from the USA on the final day of the World championships sealed the deal for the east African nation.

[link id=”82″ tax=”category” text=”Ethiopia”] was fifth with three golds, three silvers and two bronze medals with South Africa in 13th position with one gold and two bronze medals .

[link id=”106″ tax=”category” text=”Eritrea”] finished in joint 15th position with a lone gold medal while [link id=”84″ tax=”category” text=”Egypt”] and [link id=”816″ tax=”category” text=”Tunisia”] completed the African line up in the top 30 with one silver medal each.

The next edition of the [link id=”522″ tax=”post_tag” text=”IAAF World Championships”] will hold on August 5-13, 2017 at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Stadium in London.

Nigeria without a medal

Team [link id=”815″ tax=”category” text=”Nigeria”] ended their participation at [link id=”520″ tax=”category” text=”Beijing 2015″] without a medal on Sunday.

The women’s 4x400m team finished in fifth place, clocking 3:25.11, and dashing Nigeria’s last hope for a medal in the biennial championships.

The quartet of [link id=”153″ tax=”post_tag” text=”Regina George”], [link id=”824″ tax=”post_tag” text=”Funke Oladoye”], [link id=”785″ tax=”post_tag” text=”Tosin Adeloye”] and [link id=”809″ tax=”post_tag” text=”Patience Okon-George”] finished behind Jamaica, USA, Great Britain and Russia in that order.

Novlene Williams-Mills took Jamaica to victory and world lead in 3:19.13. The United States was second in 3:19.44 and Great Britain took the bronze medal in 3:23.62.

The team had ran a season’s best time of 3:23.27 in winning their semi-final on Saturday and were expected to fight for the bronze medal behind the heavy weights from the USA and Jamaica.

The 2015 championships has turned out to be one of the worst in the country’s history as none of the athletes taken to Beijing managed to get onto the podium.
